Reddit Lingo – What You need to Know

New to Reddit?

The platform might seem quite confusing. Unlike conventional social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), Reddit has its own culture, rules, lingo, and so on.

To give you a better understanding of Reddit slang, here are some of the most popular terms:

  • Subreddit – A small community dedicated to a specific topic or field. E.g. /r/marketing, /r/entrepreneur, /r/seogrowth are all examples of subreddits. Every subreddit is managed by a different team of mods (unaffiliated with Reddit Inc.) and has its own set of rules.
  • Upvote/Downvote – Every post or comment on Reddit can be upvoted (liked) or downvoted (disliked). Posts with a lot of upvotes get better visibility, while posts that get downvoted are barely seen.
  • Karma – Total amount of upvotes (minus downvotes) you’ve gained on your account. Having some karma on Reddit is important so other Redditors can see that you’re not just hanging around Reddit to promote your website.
  • AMA – Ask Me Anything. A lot of famous people do AMA threads on Reddit. The gist of it is, a celebrity or influencer hangs around a thread and answers any questions that the community might have about them, their work, etc.
  • ELI 5 – Explain like I’m 5, which means what the name implies.
  • OP – Original poster, the person who started a specific thread.
  • Tl;dr – Too long, didn’t read. At the end of long posts, some people post summaries of the posts (called “tl;dr”)
  • Shill – Promoting yourself or having an agenda.

How to Promote Yourself on Reddit – Reddit Marketing 101

Since you’re a marketer, we’re guessing you’re also looking to promote yourself or your content on Reddit – no surprise there.

However, you should know that most Reddit communities are very hostile to just about anyone being overly self-promotional.

If you just pop by a sub and post a random blog post, there’s a very good chance that you’ll get a ton of hate and maybe even get banned for spam.

So, how do you promote yourself or your company on Reddit without risking getting banned? Here are our top tips:

  1. Become a Reddit native. Reddit works differently than most conventional social media platforms. The first step to understanding it is actually becoming a user of the platform. So, make an account, subscribe to subreddits that match your interests, start browsing regularly, and comment or contribute when you can.
  2. Don’t use a company account. If you use a company account on Reddit, that automatically means you’re not a real person and you’ll just be there to promote your products/services.
  3. Minimize self-promotion. We recommend spending 80% of the time actually using Reddit for personal use (commenting, posting, etc.), and 20% for promotion. Whenever you make a promotional post, users WILL go through your post history to see if you’re a “shill.”
  4. Create Reddit-native posts. Most marketing subreddits don’t allow for direct link submissions (and even if they did, they never work). If you want Reddit to love your latest blog post, submit it in a Reddit native format. Remove conventional blog elements and format it as a post. This way, it’s a lot more likely to get engagement.
  5. Follow the rules. Each subreddit has its own rules. Make sure to read them and familiarize yourself with them to avoid getting banned.
